Whatever Works

This sets in rotation a wheel of characters who all discover for themselves that in life we must accept whatever works to make us happy. Boris and Melody accept each other. Then her parents separately find their way to New York in search of her, and they accept what they discover. They are Marietta (Patricia Clarkson), who is Melody made middle-aged and church-going, and John (Ed Begley Jr.), to whom the National Rifle Association ranks just a smidgin higher than the Supreme Court. They are appalled at this human wreckage their daughter has taken to her side.

But ... whatever works. Both Melody and John are transformed by the free spirits of New York, as so many have been, although not, it must be noted, Boris Yellnikoff. The New Yorker and the Southerners have never met anyone remotely like one another, but the Southerners are open to new experiences. More that that I cannot explain.

Attempting to impress his ideologies on religion, relationships, and the randomness of existence, lifelong New York resident Boris Yellnikoff (Larry David) rants to anyone who will listen, including the audience. But when he begrudgingly allows naive Mississippi runaway Melodie St. Ann Celestine to live in his apartment, his reclusive rages give way to an unlikely friendship and Boris begins to mold the impressionable young girl's worldly views to match his own. When it comes to love, "whatever works" is his motto, but his already perplexed life complicates itself further when Melodie's parents eventually track her down

Allen unabashedly loved the city in its grimy, dangerous years; his 1979 Manhattan opened with fireworks over Central Park, to the strains of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. That's when the script for Whatever Works first took shape. Today the city is spiffier, and Boris is mired in '70s disgust. But Allen isn't; he's a tour guide to local attractions, from the Statue of Liberty to Madame Tussauds on the Disneyfied 42nd Street. It's a vision of New York City as the welcomer and transformer of all lost souls, possibly including Boris the grouse.
