The plot summary of Sarbjit
The film begins with Dalbir Kaur (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), who leaves her abusive husband Baldev (Ankur Bhatia) and moves in with her brother Sarbjit Singh (Randeep Hooda) and his family. Sarbjit works as a farmer and loves his wife Sukhpreet (Richa Chadha) and their two daughters Poonam (Ankita Shrivastav) and Swapandeep (Shiwani Saini). One night, he crosses the border to Pakistan after having a few drinks with his friends. He is captured by the Pakistani army and accused of being Ranjit Singh, an Indian spy and terrorist who was involved in the Lahore bombings. He is tortured and forced to confess to the crimes he did not commit. He is sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Dalbir learns about her brother's fate and decides to fight for his freedom. She appeals to the Indian government, human rights organizations, media, celebrities, and public for help. She also contacts Awais Sheikh (Darshan Kumar), a Pakistani lawyer who agrees to take up Sarbjit's case pro bono. Dalbir faces many challenges and obstacles in her quest, such as political apathy, bureaucratic hurdles, social stigma, death threats, and personal losses. She also tries to keep Sarbjit's hope alive by sending him letters and visiting him in jail.
The film depicts the ordeal of Sarbjit and his family over the course of 22 years, until his tragic death in 2013. He was attacked by fellow inmates in Kot Lakhpat Jail and succumbed to his injuries. His body was returned to India amid national outrage and grief. The film ends with a tribute to Sarbjit and Dalbir, who died in 2020.
